Desktop Recommendations
Note that as Oracle applications, Desktop Operating Systems and Browsers change their specifications and requirements, these recommendations may also change. Please return to this page in advance of purchasing any desktop computer to be used with the Administrative Information Systems.
For those who have access to and are currently using the Administrative Information Systems (AIS) applications, your desktop configuration is assumed to meet at least minimum requirements for Oracle Release 11.0.3, the current version being used by AIS. The following information is for those who will soon work with the AIS office to conduct the 11i / 11.5.10 upgrade and eventually to all university users of AIS. Where a distinction is necessary between the current 11.0.3 and the future 11.5.10, notes will be provided. Please evaluate your current desktop to the information below to determine if a new desktop computer may be advisable to use after AIS has been upgraded.
For satisfactory performance when using Administrative Information Systems once upgraded to Oracle 11i (11.5.10), user computers will need a minimum hardware / software configuration. By default, if you are currently using AIS with a desktop computer, the configuration is satisfactory at least until AIS has been upgraded.
AIS has searched available resources to pinpoint a minimum and recommended set of desktop computer specifications for 11i. The two key components are CPU speed and memory. Most likely, if you have purchased a desktop computer within the past year, you will be able to access and operate the upgraded AIS without any issues. However, if you are having processing problems or are considering a new computer purchase, please consult the information below.

Note #1: If your desktop does not meet this minimum configuration, you will need to upgrade the component or replace the desktop machine. Desktops at this minimum will be borderline compatible once AIS has been upgraded. The AIS office suggests you consider a replacement.
Note #2: If you plan to purchase a new computer or need to replace a computer to access AIS, please use this configuration. If budget allows, purchase a higher configured computer as AIS and other applications will eventually require a more robust desktop computer.
Note #3: This configuration is applicable only to Oracle Applications Release 11i (11.5.10). Use of a Mac on current AIS 11.0.3 is not certified by Oracle and therefore, not recommended for use. AIS is not aware of any current SIU user of a Mac.
Note #4: Microsoft has or is in the process of de-supporting Windows 95 and 98 as an Operating System. Oracle no longer tests new releases on these platforms. If you continue to use either of these, you are at risk for problems with AIS and any other application you are using.
Windows 2000, while still supported and certified, is also anticipated to be dropped from support by Microsoft in the near future. The AIS office suggests you upgrade to Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3.
